November's Lesson
Silence
The world is full of noise, everywhere we go, every street we walk on, every house we go into, every building we enter, every bus, or train, or plane, noise is ever present. Often, we are so used to it, we don't even hear those ever present sounds. They just drone on as a background to our way of life. Noise in our world is impossible to escape from, it would seem.

Yesterday I went for a walk in the woods with Nino and Feather, to try and find some quiet time, time to think, time to chill out, time to breathe. It was a beautiful day, and I did chill out, I was able to think and to breathe, but silence..? The noise in the woods was overwhelming. Birds singing their last song before winter flight, leaves making their last struggling attempt against the autumn winds threatening to drag them from their fragile hold, water cascading from the overfull mountains into the now fast running stream, the loud crunching of natures ground cover as my feet trekked through the now dried fall spill.

Memories crowded my mind...six years old, walking through what had seemed to me then as a forest, the crunching of leaves under my feet as I gazed miles up into the trees, awed by the suns rays, the rustling sounds of the wind. The one and only time I remember walking with my father.

Noise fills our lives.

The exercise this month is about listening, and about trying to find the silence that we have within us. If we can learn to develop our ability to hear, if we can develop an acutely tuned sense of our listening abilities, we can become much more in tune with our soul, and also with the sounds that come from the spirit world. If we can become more tuned in to the sounds we want to hear, we can tune out those sounds which muddle and confuse our psychic abilities, our natural born gift to connect with the spirit world:

1) Each day choose a sound, something you intentionally want to spend time listening to. For the first time try music. Sit quietly, let your mind absorb the sounds, and ask yourself these questions. How does this music make me feel? What memories, if any, does it bring to me? How far back in my life do these memories take me? In what ways does this music inspire me? Spend a little time on this exercise, try to do it more than once, as the more you work at it the more acute your listening power will become. Each day think about these questions and try to express your feelings on paper. Try to see what you have learned about yourself.

2) Music is easy, as we are all used to listening to it in one way or another, and it will often evoke feelings in us, and memories which can come unbidden. Now though, in step two, we need to try to concentrate on more sounds, some we hear all the time, and some we hear but are not conscious of hearing. As you listen, be aware of the intentions of this lesson, remind yourself that you need to stretch your sense of hearing to its limit, like stretching a little used muscle. Begin this next step by listening to the sound of voices, others and your own, and ask yourself these questions. Is that voice harsh to your ear or soft, gentle or sharp, friendly or unfriendly? How does that sound make me feel? What is my reaction to this sound? What memories does it bring to me? How far back do these memories take me? In what ways am I inspired by this sound? Again, spend time, try to experiment with this every day. Here are some more questions you should ask. How often do I laugh? How often do I cry? How often do I complain? How often do I really listen to myself? How aware of my own sound am I? Pay attention to your answers, write them down and review them often. This is the beginning of finding the silence within you.

3) The world is full of sounds, and we often mis-listen and mis-hear, making real communication with ourselves and others impossible. Making communication with the spirit world impossible. We need to extend our ability to listen to its highest degree, we need to work this muscle or it will become flabby and useless to us. So here are some examples of more sounds to try as you continue with this exercise. Church bells, a ticking clock, wind in the trees, falling rain, rustling leaves, running water, the clicking of a key board, summer sounds, winter sounds, spring sounds and autumn sounds. Each time you try a new sound ask yourself your questions, pay attention to the answers you find, write them down, and review them often. Over the next few weeks see if you can develop your sense of hearing to the point where you can hear these sounds:
The sound of grass growing.
The sound of stars moving through the night.
The sound of the moon swinging in the sky.
And finally...the sound of silence.
Talk with community members about your progress, they may be able to help, or write us an account of your progress. We'd love to post it in our spotlight section for everyone to read.
Good luck and be ready for next month's lesson...
