December's Lesson - 2010
Over the next several months while Rosemary has such a busy schedule, is on tour etc, Samantha will be collaborating with her on writing the lessons for the month.
Rosemary is very much a part of the process, but not always able to sit at a computer and write. Since Samantha has grown up with the teachings of Rosemary, we hope you'll agree that she's the ideal candidate to collaborate with her mother in order to bring you a lesson every month.
Rosemary at this time is writing lessons as and when she can, due to a busy schedule. So please be patient and excuse her if occassionally her lessons are not up to date. She's doing her best. In the meantime, please enjoy this NEW lesson for the month and don't forget to visit our archives for many, many other lessons from Rosemary.
The Joy of Giving
Everyone who celebrates Christmas is now getting nervous or harassed as the time ticks by and so many things are still left to be done.
The Christmas tree has to be decorated; the Christmas cards need sending out; the Turkey has to be ordered, etc. Excited children are waiting for Santa Claus to come down the chimney, knowing he will bring gifts, toys and books and all good things. Traditionally, this is the time for giving; this is the time for good will towards others; this is the time to celebrate the joyous birth of Christ.
I love Christmas; I love all it stands for; I love the carol singing, the lighting of candles, the Christmas Mass; the faces of children surrounded by magic and filled with the love of God.
Every year for the last several years I have taken on a family for Christmas, a family who were struggling financially and who could not afford to give their children a good Christmas. With the help of my students we have provided warm winter clothes and boots, slippers and PJ’s, dressing gowns, toys and books. For the parents we bought all the food needed to make a really good Christmas feast, a Turkey dinner, Christmas pudding, and lots of other goodies. It has always seemed to me to be a small thing to do for those who have so little from those of us who have such a lot.
Our families were always chosen carefully with help from the community, and I always took on this responsibility personally. This was my way of giving, in the season when the spirit of Christmas is abounding. I know that there are so many of you out there who have done the same and more; given your time and energy to making someone else’s life better; someone else’s Christmas better.
Spiritual growth comes in many ways; generosity comes easily if it is only about putting your hand in your pocket, writing a check, opening your purse. Generosity of spirit is about much more than that. We need money to help others; of course we do; but what we need more than money is the effort it takes to travel just a little bit further down the path of giving; to get a little bit more involved with the process, to put ourselves out, to take action; to encourage others to participate in the process of giving.
It takes but one small voice to change the world; but many voices are even better…the lesson for this is month is simply to be one of those voices. If you have given before, give more. If you have been involved before, be more involved. If you have become tired of giving, take a moment to think about how tired those people who need your help must be. Tired of struggling; tired of being poor or lost or lonely…and you will soon see that your tiredness is nothing compared to theirs.
This is not an exercise about giving money…this is an exercise about giving time and energy; this is an exercise about giving someone in need a warm hug, a gentle smile, a cup of tea on a cold day; this is simply about giving love...
Try to give every day for all the days leading up to Christmas...and if you are lucky, it will become a habit that will give you joy beyond anything you could imagine...
